House Sandrock - History

House Sandrock was built as his own family home by Brian Sandrock, a renowned Pretoria based architect in 1960. The house was built in the international style that became the de facto descendant of the modern style tailored to the warmer climates of the southern hemisphere.

Brian Sandrock is known for buildings such as the UNISA main campus, the Safari 1 nuclear reactor building at Pelindaba, the administrative building at the University of Pretoria known as "Die Skip" (The Ship) among others including the Musaion, elements of which can be seen in the detail of House Sandrock.

The apartment was added by the Sandrock himself in 1976 with the same design queues to seamlessly blend with the house inside and out. The new patio roof unifying the patios of the main house and the apartment was added by the current owners in 2017.

The apartment is furnished with mid century modern furniture as far as possible. The kitchen and bathroom, however, had a refresh to fit in with a contemporary lifestyle.
